Our English Language Arts Curriculum follows a balanced literacy model of instruction. Balanced literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. Balanced literacy promotes a student-centered classroom with emphasis on independence through various reading and writing experiences across genres and cultures. Students participate in whole group and small group activities involving reading, writing, word study, speaking, and listening skills.
Leveled texts, classroom libraries, and literacy centers provide opportunities for shared and individual learning experiences that help students develop an appreciation for quality literature and a love for learning. Thematic novels, authentic literature, and quality non-fiction/informational texts are all embedded throughout the curriculum with a strong emphasis on citing evidence/details from text and making inter-disciplinary connections. Each day, teachers and students work with a wide variety of materials and resources to ensure learning experiences are both challenging and fun.
Teachers individualize instruction to meet the needs of students by monitoring and analyzing student data through ongoing assessments in reading and writing, such as the DRA2, Fountas & Pinnell benchmark assessments, unit assessments, and running records.
